What is Life Cycle Benefit Analysis?

Life Cycle Benefit Analysis (LCBA) is an innovative methodology that complements traditional Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) by systematically identifying, quantifying, and communicating the positive environmental benefits of products, materials, and services throughout their life cycle. While traditional LCA focuses on impacts and burdens such as carbon emissions, water consumption, and pollution, LCBA captures positive contributions like carbon sequestration, biodiversity enhancement, and circular economy benefits.

What does LCBA measure?

LCBA quantifies nine regenerative benefit categories verified across a product's life cycle: rainfall enhancement, carbon drawdown, oxygen generation, urban heat reduction, human health improvement, environmental health and ecosystem resilience, support for birds, insects and mammals, soil carbon growth, and pollution reduction. These benefits are captured through the NaturePositive+ Declaration (NP+D) process developed by the Evah Institute and published as the EPD Benefit Addendum (EPD:BA) alongside the verified EPD.

Manufacturers use LCBA to identify and optimize environmental benefits during product design and to support marketing claims with verified data. LCA consultants use it to prepare EPD Benefit Addendum reports following Global GreenTag standards. Architects, specifiers, and procurement teams use LCBA-certified products to achieve green building credits and meet sustainability commitments. What LCBA measures — and why it's unique.

Traditional Life Cycle Assessments measure impacts and resource use. The NaturePositive+ Declaration — and the LCBA addendum behind it — goes further: to manage a product's relationship with nature, you first have to measure what it gives back. LCBA is that measurement framework: both the natural and technical cycle benefits, quantified and verified.

1 · Benefit Measures

Measuring what nature gives back.

Standard LCA tracks what a product takes from or adds to environmental burden. LCBA adds the opposite lens: what does the product actively contribute? Unique Life Cycle Benefit Analysis methodology, grounded in conventional LCA practice, captures both natural-cycle and technical-cycle benefits so manufacturers can demonstrate positive outcomes, not just reduced harm.

2 · EPD:BA

The addendum that ships with every EPD.

Every NaturePositive+ Declaration includes an EN 15804 +A2 compliant EPD and an EPD:BA Benefit Addendum — the formal output of LCBA. The addendum enables direct benefit-to-impact ratio reporting so specifiers, green-rating bodies, and procurement teams can compare regenerative performance on an equal footing to carbon impact.
