Part 1 · Questions 01–03

Understanding EPDs

What an EPD actually is, what it isn’t, and why specifiers care.

01

What is an EPD?

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a standardised, third-party verified document that communicates transparent, comparable life-cycle environmental data for a product — including embodied carbon, energy use, water use and waste generation.

EPDs are Type III environmental declarations under ISO 14025. Think of an EPD as a nutrition label for environmental impact: it does not certify a product as “green” — it reports its measured impact, transparently and consistently with every other product calculated against the same rules.

02

How is an EPD different from other green claims or eco-labels?

Self-declared marketing claims (“sustainable”, “low-carbon”) and pass/fail eco-labels do not report quantitative impact data. EPDs do — and they do it against published Product Category Rules so that two products in the same category can be compared directly.

Every published GreenTag EPD is independently verified by an accredited third party against ISO 14025 and the applicable PCR. That verification step is what separates an EPD from a marketing claim.

03

Why should architects, specifiers and procurement teams care about EPDs?

EPDs provide the comparable, verified data needed for whole-of-building embodied-carbon calculations, low-carbon procurement, and credit scoring under LEED, Green Star, BREEAM and the WELL Building Standard.

For projects targeting net-zero or material-disclosure credits, EPDs are currently the only credible way to substantiate embodied-carbon claims at the product level.

Part 2 · Questions 04–05

Standards & verification

The rules our EPDs comply with, and how independence is assured.

04

What standards do GreenTag EPDs comply with?

Every GreenTag EPD is compliant with:

ISO 14025 — Type III environmental declarations.
ISO 14040 / 14044 — life cycle assessment principles and framework.
ISO 21930 — sustainability in building construction.
EN 15804+A2 — construction product environmental declarations.

The program also maintains mutual-recognition arrangements with other Type III EPD program operators internationally, which is why a GreenTag EPD is accepted in major green building rating schemes worldwide.

05

Who verifies an EPD, and how do I know the verification is independent?

Verification is conducted by qualified third-party verifiers who are independent of both the LCA practitioner and the declaration holder.

Approved verifiers must demonstrate professional LCA experience, knowledge of ISO 14025 and ISO 14044, independence from the EPD development team, and completion of program-specific training. Each verifier signs a statement of independence as part of the verification record published with the EPD.

Part 3 · Questions 06–09

Getting your product certified

Pathway, timeline, documentation and renewal — for manufacturers.

06

How do I get my product certified with a GreenTag EPD?

Begin by submitting an EPD application through the website. The program team then contacts you to identify the applicable PCR, scope the project (number of products, sites, functional units), and connect you with a qualified LCA practitioner.

From there the typical pathway is: data collection → LCA modelling → EPD drafting → third-party verification → registration and publication. The full pathway is documented in the General Program Instructions.

07

What is the typical timeline and cost to obtain an EPD?

Timelines depend on product complexity and the readiness of your manufacturing data. A typical project runs 4–6 months from PCR confirmation to EPD publication. Projects with multiple product variants or multiple manufacturing sites take longer.

Cost depends on the LCA practitioner you engage, the number of products and sites in scope, and the verification scope. Program registration and verification fees are published transparently in the program documentation — contact the program team for a project-specific quote.

08

What documentation will I need to provide?

For verification you will need a complete LCA report with supporting calculations, the EPD document drafted to the program template, evidence of data quality and sources, manufacturing process descriptions, and product specifications and technical data sheets.

Detailed requirements are in the General Program Instructions — your LCA practitioner will work with you to assemble each item to the required level of detail before submission.

09

How long is a published EPD valid?

The standard validity period is 5 years from publication. EPDs may be renewed on expiry, and the program operates a notification system that alerts declaration holders ahead of upcoming expirations.

For products with stable manufacturing data, a streamlined re-verification pathway is available at renewal — keeping a current EPD active typically takes substantially less effort than producing the first one.

Part 4 · Questions 10–12

Using & finding EPDs

How EPDs feed into rating schemes, where to find them, and how the pieces fit together.

10

Do GreenTag EPDs help score points in green building rating schemes?

Yes. GreenTag EPDs are recognised under LEED v4 / v4.1 (MR Building Product Disclosure & Optimization), Green Star (Materials Lifecycle Impacts), BREEAM (Mat 01) and the WELL Building Standard.

They also support whole-of-building lifecycle assessment (WLCA) credit requirements where applicable. Each scheme’s specific credit weighting and documentation requirements are published in the relevant rating tool.

11

Where can I find published GreenTag EPDs?

All published EPDs are available in the public EPD Registry on this website, searchable by product, manufacturer, category and issue date.

Each entry links to the full EPD PDF and any addenda — including the LCBA (Life Cycle Benefit Analysis) supplement where it has been issued for that product.

12

What is the difference between an EPD, a PCR and an LCA?

LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) is the underlying scientific study that quantifies environmental impacts across a product’s life cycle.

PCR (Product Category Rules) is the rule book that ensures every EPD in a given product category is calculated comparably — same functional unit, same system boundaries, same indicators.

EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) is the verified, public-facing report that communicates the LCA results, written to its applicable PCR.

In short: the LCA produces the numbers, the PCR governs how the numbers are calculated, and the EPD is the verified disclosure of the result.
